Richland company partnership wins California national lab work

Apogee Logistics of Richland has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to perform demolition at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California as part of a joint venture company.

The Small Business Administration approved a mentor-protégé agreement in January 2014 between Apogee Logistics and NorthStar Group Holdings, which does demolition and environmental remediation work across the nation. Soon after that the two organizations formed the joint venture company Dynamic Management Solutions.

The work at the California national lab awarded by the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management is the first contract awarded to Dynamic Management Solutions, said Salina Savage, who formed Apogee Logistics (formerly Savage Logistics) with Barbara Stone in 2007.

The contract covers cleaning up and removing excess facilities covering roughly 19,000 square feet in a section of the lab campus called “Old Town.” It also covers cleanup and removal of 28,000 square feet of concrete slabs, cleanup of contaminated soil and restoration of demolition sites.

The buildings that will be torn down previously were used for work with radioactive isotopes, beryllium and hazardous chemicals.

Apogee Logistics, which started with three used trucks and five trailers, has since added 29 new trucks and 70 trailers and has 30,000 square feet of warehouse space. It employs more than 40 people in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California.

Among its projects is transporting 6,700 concrete segments from Puyallup for the Highway 99 tunnel being dug in Seattle and transporting nuclear fuel manufactured by Areva. It also is cleaning up contaminated soil or wastewater for Los Alamos National Laboratory and Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

It also works with Battelle’s radiation portal monitoring program, transporting the portals and supporting its testing program.
